Corfu is known for its multi-day rains and flash floods. This is caused by air masses from the cold, high mountains of Epirus colliding with extremely humid and warm air from the Ionian Sea.
Adjacent to the Meraki Hills is the rema – a deep gorge that is mostly dry. It is an extension of the gorge with walls more than 10 metres high, which drains the waters from the summit a hundred metres higher, on which the Towers of Chlomos stand.

There is a water culvert under the road with a 600 mm diameter pipe that drains into our rema. Unfortunately, last year the pipe clogged and masses of water collapsed onto the plot of land to the right, causing part of the road to be ripped up.

As a result, we need to fortify the entire 8.5 metre high hill to ensure a safe descent to our site. A fortification of stone-filled gabions will be erected along a stretch of about 20 metres, and run-off water will be diverted so that excess water drains back into the rema.
