The garbage problem is evident in all tourist areas of Greece. Like many negative phenomena, in Corfu more so.
A quick analysis of articles on local portal enimerosi shows that the same thing is repeated every year: piles of uncollected garbage, unresolved tenders, rescue actions, special meetings and measures to solve the problems. Interestingly, this does not only apply to the tourist season.
The root cause is probably simple: Greece produces garbage at a rate above average, while it recycles at a rate below average (Eurostat).
Of course, one can complain about the efficiency of local authorities, but as the experience of several countries teaches us – garbage is an area of gray area, opportunities for corruption and always huge money in play. There is nothing we can do about it, one has to count on civilization changes. No one can explain why only in Greece there are no bins for waste segregation.
Title photo shows empty bins and hundreds of garbage bags. So, waste collectors went to the place, emptied bins, left bags. How come?
On the other hand, what can be done is to give up plastic bags (which, contrary to EU law, are handed out in every store, pharmacy and cafe). Take part in a community cleanup of your own neighborhood.
I don’t know what else.
